The Systems Biology Group in this project aims at understanding and designing of biological systems and creates a new paradigm in biology, Systems Biology. As model organisms, we focus on Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Escherichia coli. By investigating the genetic, cellular and metabolic mechanisms together with their computer simulations, we will develop novel instrumentation systems and analysis theory. Advanced imaging technologies, reverse engineering methods from experimental data, and other related technologies will be developed.

What is Systems Biology?

Systems Biology is a new field in biology that aims at system-level understanding of biological systems, and to understand "Biological System as System." System-level understanding essentially requires that we need to accomplish followings:

  • Understanding of system structures
  • Understanding of behaviors of the system
  • Understanding how to control the system
  • Understanding how to design the system

This requires research in broad range of areas such as molecular biology, computer science, control theory and engineering, technologies for quantitative measurements, micro manipulations, and other technologies. Details shall be refered to:
